1. When choosing accessories, make sure there’s a common theme – color, texture, design, weight, etc. If you’re going for light and airy, you usually won’t want to wear leather. Brown paired with black accessories is typically a no-no. Stripes should be paired with solids and patterns should be similar in design or paired with solids.
2. Accessorize to scale by wearing accessories that fit your body size. Consider your height, weight and bone structure to determine your body size. Smaller individuals should choose small and medium accessories. Medium or average individuals can pull off most any accessory. Larger individuals should choose medium to large accessories. Very large individuals should opt for medium sized accessories.
The exception would be if you’re wearing an outfit that’s big and voluminous, scale back on the accessories. Also, sleeker outfits can handle bigger accessories.
3. One key rule is to never overdo it. Choose just one large piece per area – a large headband and small earrings and necklace, or a long necklace with small earrings. Accessories should enhance your outfit, not overshadow it. Avoid items that overpower your outfit and take the focus away from you.
Also, don’t overdo color. Choose 3 perfectly selected colors and try not to use any more than that.
There you have it – theme, size and amount.
Let’s hear it – How do you accessorize? What are your favorite accessories: jewelry, bags, shoes, scarves, or belts? What are your “rules”?
